Joe Root on Sunday missed England’s training session as both sides prepare to face off in the third Test starting January 16.
The England captain had to sit out the practice session due to a stomach bug. This is the second time he has been struck with illness on this tour.
Before the start of the series, a lot of England players were down with flu-like bug symptoms. The tour match before the first Test was stripped off the first-class status as a result of the illness in England camp. Dominic Bess and Craig Overton were called up as covers in the squad.
Rory Burns and James Anderson have already been ruled out of the entire series with injuries. Burns had picked up an ankle problem in a friendly football game before the start of second Test while Anderson was ruled out for the final two Tests due to a left-rib injury.
Burns underwent surgery on his ankle and is set to miss the Sri Lanka tour, which starts in March.
The four-match series between England and South Africa is level 1-1. Both teams will face off at Port Elizabeth on Thursday before heading to Johannesburg (January 24) for the final Test.
