Indian Premier League (IPL) organisers have decided to promulgate new rules for this year's IPL edition. Concussion substitutes will be permitted to replace crocked players and the ruling of no-balls will be handled by third umpires for the first time in the glitzy T20 league.
"The concussion substitute and the no-ball rule are new additions for the season," the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly, told the media.
Last year in August, concussion substitute was used for the first time in Test cricket during Ashes when Steve Smith received a nasty blow on his head and subsequently got replaced by Marnus Labuschagne.
The concussed player replacement will be subjected to match referee's approval and would have to be comparable to the injured player.
There were many no-balls that went unnoticed in the ICC 2019 ODI World Cup and the Ashes which sparked a fierce debate in cricket circles regarding assigning the responsibility of watching no-balls to the third umpire instead of on-field umpires.
The pressure was mounting on IPL officials to take notice of the slip-ups in the prior seasons and spats between stakeholders of the game over shoddy umpiring were becoming a common occurrence, therefore, the IPL organisers have taken the lead in this realm and introduced new no-ball rule.
IPL won't be the first event to observe TV umpire calling no-balls as a trial run underwent in the T20 and one-day series between India and the West Indies in 2019.
The pioneer of T20 leagues - IPL - is the world's most lucrative league and attracts the world's best superstars of cricket - barring Pakistan players.
Also, this year's IPL fiesta will see for the first time an all-stars one-off fixture between two sides that will feature leading performers from all the franchises.
The 2020 IPL season is set to kick off on March 29 with defending champions Mumbai Indians to start the proceedings. The final will be played on May 24 in Mumbai.
Mumbai Indians crowned champions in the 12th edition will be up against seven other sides after a couple of months and the schedule for the 13th edition will be announced soon.
