Injured Mark Adair ruled out of Afghanistan T20I series in India

Ireland pacer Mark Adair has been forced to miss the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in India due to an ankle injury.

Adair was part of Ireland's limited-overs squads that toured the Caribbean last month but is currently working on his fitness and conditioning.

His absence from the national side has prompted the inclusion of Shane Getkate, who is termed as a like-for-like replacement for Adair.

Getkate has played three ODIs and 14 T20Is for Ireland with his previous international appearance coming during the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier.

Getkate's arrival into the squad in place of Adair is the only change to Ireland's 14-man T20I squad.

“With the T20 World Cup approaching in October, the Selectors are looking to provide an opportunity for players to test themselves in various conditions, while [Head Coach] Graham Ford searches for the right combinations and tactics that we will take into the World Cup," chairman of selectors Andrew White said.

“While it is unfortunate Mark Adair will not be travelling, this opens up an opportunity for Shane Getkate, who missed out on the Caribbean tour.”

Ireland were initially leading 1-0 in the T20I series against incumbent T20I champions West Indies but faced defeat in the last game with the final result reading 1-1.

"We are confident that we have selected a well-balanced side, but we will be looking for greater consistency as the year progresses," White added.

"The last tour gave us an insight into this Irish side’s potential - by beating the World Champions in their own backyard, but there is no doubt the players will be keen to show those performances on a more regular basis."

The three 20-over fixtures against Afghanistan will be held in Greater Noida as the series commences on March 6.
