Mushfiqur Rahim has returned to Bangladesh's squad for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe after opting out of the Pakistan tour because of security concerns while speedster Mustafizur Rahman has also earned a recall in the longer format.
The 16-member squad announced on Sunday features a host of changes from the one that endured an innings defeat to Pakistan earlier this month.
Veteran middle-order batsman Mahmudullah has lost his place in the side following an extended lean run with the bat in Tests. Mahmudullah has been asked to focus on white-ball cricket after managing to score only a single half-century in his last 10 Test innings.
Fellow batter Soumya Sarkar has been rendered unavailable for the Zimbabwe clash as he is set to tie the nuptial knot. Additionally, pacers Rubel Hossain and Al-Amin Hossain have been dropped despite the latter not playing the contest against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.
"It is unfortunate that some players had to miss out but our priority has been to ensure balance and continuity. We felt that Mahmudullah needed a break from the red ball," chairman of the selection panel, Minhajul Abedin, said in a BCB statement.
The exclusion of several players has allowed spinner Mehidy Hasan and pacer Taskin Ahmed to stage a comeback to the Test side.
Meanwhile, rookie batsman Yasir Ali and fast bowler Hasan Mahmud are the inclusions in the squad who are yet to make their debut in the format.
"I believe we have selected the best possible Test squad under present circumstances. There is a very nice blend of experience and potential," Abedin added as Bangladesh try to regain stability in red-ball cricket.
Mushfiqur's return to the Test unit lends depth to Bangladesh's brittle middle-order given the fact he is their second-most prolific run-scorer.
While the team is still reeling from the after-effects of Shakib Al Hasan's one-year suspension, Mushfiqur is deemed as the senior player tasked with the responsibility to navigate them through the troubling times.
Bangladesh's Test match against Zimbabwe will commence on February 22, before which the tourists will play a two-day practice game.
