Former Sri Lanka skipper, Angelo Mathews has been ruled out for the first Test against Pakistan with an injury to his calf muscle.
Mathews has been sustaining injuries in the last year or so. In August last year, Mathews tore his calf muscle during the fourth ODI against Australia which subsequently ruled him out for the remainder of the tour. Mathews then ended up missing the succeeding two-Test series against Zimbabwe in October.
He later hurt his hamstring on the South Africa tour in January but was expected to be fit for the T20I series against Bangladesh, having missed the Tests and the ODIs already. However, his calf injury resurfaced to rule him out of the T20Is too.
Given the struggles his side have had recently; this will be a major blow given all the experience the veteran batsman brings along.
The first of the two-Test series starts from September 28 with the first Test to be played at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi.
Sri Lanka will also be playing their first ever day-night Test at Dubai, starting from October 6.
