Moeen Ali will lead Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred, it was announced on Tuesday. The England all-rounder will lead a side which includes Chris Woakes and Kane Williamson.
"Every time that I come to Edgbaston it takes me back to some great first memories of coming here at a very young age," said Moeen on his appointment.
He added: "We're a tight-knit city in Birmingham. We have so much around us that brings the people together, no matter who you are or your background.
"I know how much of a uniting game cricket is and as a leader of the Birmingham Phoenix that is something I definitely want to promote," explained the 32-year-old, Worcestershire's captain when they won the 2018 Twenty20 Blast title at Edgbaston.
Phoenix head coach Andrew McDonald, who is currently serving as Australia’s assistant coach, said: "Moeen is a fantastic all-rounder and has the experience and temperament to lead the team."
Of late, Moeen has taken a break from Test cricket, which means he won’t be a part of England’s Test tour of Sri Lanka in March. He will be a part of Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League and will later on play for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.
Moeen was named player of the match in the second T20I against South Africa, where he smashed 39 off just 11 balls as England had went on to win the series.
Birmingham Phoenix will start their campaign against Eoin Morgan’s London Spirit.
