Dhananjaya de Silva and Nuwan Pradeep have succumbed to injuries ahead of the two-match T20I series against West Indies.
Pradeep could not complete his bowling spell in the final ODI in Pallekele on Sunday and was forced off the field after sustaining a hamstring injury. His absence in the fateful encounter was covered by brilliant bowling from former skipper Angelo Mathews, who claimed four wickets to ensure a thrilling six-run win.
The veteran paceman will be out of action for six weeks, putting doubts over his availability for the home Test series against England later this month.
Meanwhile, de Silva suffered a wrist injury in the same match having conjured a crucial half-century and delivered five overs.
Sri Lanka Cricket have brought in 22-year-old Asitha Fernando as Pradeep's replacement for the two T20Is. Fernando has represented Sri Lanka only once on the international stage when he featured in an ODI against Zimbabwe in 2017.
His inclusion beefs up the pace bowling department boasting the likes of Lahiru Kumara, Lasith Malinga, Isuru Udana and a rejuvenated Mathews.
Sri Lanka have not sought a replacement for de Silva and trusting the spin-bowling all-round options already present in the squad.
The first T20I between the two sides will be played on March 4 as both teams launch preparations for the T20 World Cup in October.
