Malik, Wahab wreak havoc to set up Peshawar Zalmi's third win

Shoaib Malik, Haider Ali and Wahab Riaz combined together as Peshawar Zalmi edged out Quetta Gladiators by 30 runs to set up their third win of the tournament.

Asked to bat first in a 15-over-per-side game, Peshawar Zalmi scored 170 for six in their first innings. Shoaib Malik (54 off 27) and Haider Ali (39 off 24) were the two batsmen who did most of the damage.

In reply, Quetta Gladiators could only reach 140 for the loss of seven wickets in the required overs. Shane Watson was the first batsman to depart. With a big total in the hindsight, Watson tried to up the ante by beating the man at extra cover but couldn’t do so.

Ahmad Shehzad struggled to motor along, trying to hit the ball too hard and miscuing it on most occasions. That, in turn, transferred the pressure on Jason Roy at the other end, who ended up getting his stumps rattled by a straighter ball from Yasir Shah.

Soon after, Ahmed Shehzad perished. He made a paltry 10 off 17 balls. Ben Cutting delivered a few blows but he was caught at the fence off a controversial no-ball call by the third umpire. Young Azam Khan didn’t hang around for long. He was caught first-ball in the deep, trying to clear the fence.

Earlier, Peshawar Zalmi posted a mammoth total with Shoaib Malik batting smartly to smash Quetta’s bowling. Quetta’s tactics of bowling either too full or short didn’t work as Malik hammered them to all parts of the ground.

Haider Ali scored a quick fire 39 off 24 balls, impressing with his hitting mechanics. He smashed four boundaries and two sixes in his innings.
