Perera's contusion to his right middle finger has ruled him out of action for a couple of weeks, though it is possible he might be fit in time for the second Test at home.
"He is expected to be fit in two weeks," the statement from Sri Lanka Cricket said.
The talented southpaw played an epic knock last year in Durban when he slammed an unbeaten 153 to set up a thrilling one-wicket win for his team.
His subsequent appearances saw him aggregate a total of 44 runs across three games. This prompted his omission from the side for the Zimbabwe Test series. Prior to his controversial axing, Perera was included in the Test squad for the series in Pakistan but failed to get a game under Mickey Arthur's maiden coaching assignment with Sri Lanka.
The first Test between England and hosts Sri Lanka begins on March 19 in Galle and the second match commences on March 27 in Colombo.
Perera last donned the national jersey in the red-ball format against New Zealand in August 2019.
