India-South Africa series cancelled owing to coronavirus pandemic

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called off the remaining two ODIs against South Africa because of the coronavirus threat.

The opening fixture of the three-match series between the two sides in Dharamsala was abandoned without a ball bowled.

The next game was scheduled to take place in Lucknow on Sunday followed by the final one in Kolkata on Wednesday.

"Cricket South Africa will visit India at a later date to play 3 One-day Internationals. The BCCI-CSA will jointly work out the revised schedule," the BCCI stated in its media release. The rescheduling of the series depends upon any open window among India's international assignments in the future.

Earlier, it was decided that the last two ODIs would be played behind closed doors, following the pattern observed in the ongoing Australia-New Zealand series down under.

The matches faced cancellation hours after the BCCI officially postponed the start of the cash-rich Indian Premier League till April 15. The eight-team competition was originally slated to begin on March 29 but the organizers have been moved to push the date after taking advice from various central and state government departments.

India, the world's second-most populous country, has reported 81 cases of the coronavirus so far with one death from COVID-19.
