Sri Lankan fast bowler Shehan Madushanka has been arrested for the alleged possession of drugs, officials informed on Monday.
The 25-year-old, who has represented Sri Lanka in a solitary ODI and two T20Is, was found to be carrying just over two grams of heroin when he was detained in the town of Pannala on Sunday.
Madushanka was in the company of another person while driving his car amidst a nationwide coronavirus lockdown. Mobility restrictions in Sri Lanka have been quite stringent resulting in the arrest of nearly 65,000 people for breaking the virus curfew.
Madushanka will now spend two weeks in police custody as announced by the Pannala magistrate, after which he will be produced before the High Court.
The right-arm pacer had a promising start to his career as he became only the fourth bowler to pick up a hat-trick on ODI debut by registering the unique feat against Bangladesh in 2018. Madushanka got the wickets of Mashrafe Mortaza, Rubel Hossain and Mahmudullah on successive deliveries to cap off a memorable outing.
He could play just a couple of T20Is thereon as his stint in the national side was cut short by a spate of injuries.
