India formally call off limited-overs series in Sri Lanka

India's limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka will not go ahead as planned due to the coronavirus pandemic, officials in Colombo confirmed on Thursday.

India were set to play three ODIs and three T20Is against Sri Lanka next month but the fixtures will now take place at a later date subject to government approval.

The coronavirus situation in Sri Lanka has not completely descended into a health crisis with 736 active cases at the moment. However, logistical challenges faced by the Indian players over the resumption of training have compelled the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take this decision.

The number of COVID-19 infections in India has continued to increase at an exponential rate, posing numerous problems to authorities regarding the arrangement of safe venues for players' practice.

Despite the setback to the series, the BCCI reportedly remains committed to sending its team to Sri Lanka in August after all protocols have been fulfilled.

“Although BCCI remains committed to the FTP and towards its fellow members, it will have to seek the advice from Government of India and the health regulatory authorities before taking any decision for the resumption of cricket,” the BCCI stated in a communication sent to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

India last competed against Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series earlier this year with Virat Kohli's men sweeping to a 2-0 win. India's previous tour to Sri Lanka, on the other hand, occurred in 2017 when they played three Tests, five ODIs and one T20I.
