Root returns for Australia ODIs; Buttler, Archer recalled for both formats

Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood have all returned for England's upcoming ODI and T20I series against Australia but Test skipper Joe Root has failed to find a spot in the 20-over line-up.

All of these individuals were rested for England's limited-overs clashes against Ireland and Pakistan owing to the workload of six back-to-back Tests prompting them to field separate squads for red-ball and white-ball cricket.

With the Tests now over, some of the longer-format regulars including Sam Curran and Chris Woakes have slotted back into the teams announced for the series that starts on September 4.

Root's omission from the T20I squad is not that surprising given the batting riches at England's disposal at the moment. However, he was the third-leading run-getter in the 2016 World T20 but has been unable to get a game for England in the shortest format in over a year.

Although England will be missing the services of Ben Stokes, who is spending time with his ill father in New Zealand, they will be buoyed by the inclusion of several stars who played a crucial role in their victorious World Cup campaign.

Both England sides will be captained by Eoin Morgan, whose destructive 66 helped the hosts gain an unassailable 1-0 lead in the ongoing T20I series against Pakistan in Manchester on Sunday.

Jason Roy has been ruled out of the Australia T20Is due to a side strain but he is expected to recover in time for the ODI assignment.

David Willey was at the receiving end of another contentious decision as he was dropped from both squads even though he was the standout performer for his team in the 2-1 win over Ireland earlier this month.

Willey was excluded from England's World Cup squad in 2019 in place of Archer, who delivered the decisive Super Over in the final at Lord's that made them world champions.

The T20Is should have originally served as a warm-up for both teams for the T20 World Cup in Australia, but that has been postponed to next year in India.

"We have selected strong squads," England national selector Ed Smith said.

"We are also continuing to develop depth in preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cups."
