Pakistan's elite domestic cricketers have an opportunity to earn up to PKR 3.2 million in the 2020-21 domestic season, which is 83% more than what the top players could have pocketed in the previous season.
Each of the 10 A+ category players are set to receive PKR 150,000 as a monthly retainer according to the revamped pay structure unveiled by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Players will additionally get a match fee of PKR 40,000 and will have the chance of adding more to their remuneration by virtue of getting a share in the prize money if their team reaches the finals.
Similarly, a player belonging to Category D has been allowed a monthly retainer PKR 40,000, which means he can collect PKR 1.8 million if he features in all the 30 First XI league matches. This amount is 7% greater than what the players in the highest category received last year.
In contrast to the former method of a fixed retainer for all domestic contracted players and a match fee that valued participation in red-ball cricket more, the new plan involves a range of retainers and a rigid match fee.
"Last year, all the domestic contracted First XI players had received a flat monthly retainer of PKR50,000 and match fee of PKR40,000 for white-ball cricket and PKR75,000 for red-ball cricket," the PCB mentioned in their press release.
PCB Director of High Performance Nadeem Khan backed the board's decision to boost the income of players amid the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic that has caused financial troubles elsewhere in the cricket world.
“The PCB is aware that Pakistan cricketers are not the highest-paid in the world, but it is our endeavour to slowly and gradually improve their contracts so that they can get best returns for their talent and also plan their futures,” he said.
“PCB generates its funds and revenues through cricket and it is appropriate that a large chunk of these funds are reinvested into development and cricketers.
“I am confident that domestic cricketers will see these enhancements as a morale and confidence booster, and they will not only aim to perform better than last year but this will introduce an element of competition between these players in pursuit of improved contracts next year.”
The 2020-21 enhanced monthly retainer structure is as follows:
Category A+ = 10 players, PKR 150,000 per month
Category A = 38 players, PKR 85,000 per month
Category B = 48 players, PKR 75,000 per month
Category C = 72 players, PKR 65,000 per month
Category D = 24 players, PKR 40,000 per month
