Covid-19 Pandemic

Bangladesh pacer Abu Jayed tests positive for coronavirus

Abu Jayed, a regular of Bangladesh's Test side, has tested positive for Covid-19 in the latest round of tests conducted by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

Jayed was part of the 27-man training group announced by BCB for the team's upcoming Test tour of Sri Lanka next month.

Jayed, who has turned out for the national side in 14 international matches, is the only player to return a positive test result among the 27 players.

Earlier, opening batsman Saif Hassan had tested positive for the virus but has reportedly recovered from the bout of infection.

"Pace bowler Abu Jayed Chowdhury Rahi has reported positive for COVID-19. He will receive treatment in isolation for COVID as per guidelines and will undergo further tests in due course," BCB Sports Physician Dr Debashis Chowdhury informed in a media release.

Bangladesh's players recently resumed training on an individual basis in accordance with the Covid-19 protocols despite the soaring number of cases in the country.

Bangladesh's tour of Sri Lanka was originally supposed to be held in July-August but it was postponed due to the pandemic.

However, uncertainty lingers over the prospects of going ahead with the tour given BCB's apprehensions regarding the quarantine period demanded by the Sri Lankan government. While the island nation does not host a large number of active virus infections, the Sri Lankan authorities have ordered a two-week mandatory period of self-isolation for anyone entering its shores.

The three Tests between the two sides will count towards the calculation of points in the ICC World Test Championship.
