Delhi Capitals pacer Ishant Sharma has been ruled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season after suffering from an abdominal muscle tear.
The veteran seamer had thus far played only a single game for the Capitals, in which he failed to get a wicket in three overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Sharma had entered IPL 2020 with an injury scare prompting the Delhi management to manage his workload and assess his rehabilitation.
His absence has meant that the franchise has been forced to use relatively inexperienced pacers in the line-up but this has not affected DC's successful run. The Shreyas Iyer-led team has won five games out of seven with Kagiso Rabada spearheading their pace attack.
Sharma's injury, though, casts doubts over his availability for India's tour of Australia following the tournament. Sharma, who has represented India in 97 Tests, is the second fast bowler from his country after Bhuvneshwar Kumar to endure a similar fate in the IPL 2020.
"Delhi Capitals fast bowler Ishant Sharma experienced an acute episode of left rib cage pain while bowling at a team training session on 7 October 2020 in Dubai?," the Delhi Capitals statement read.
"Subsequent investigations revealed that he sustained a left internal oblique muscle tear. This injury will, unfortunately, rule him out of the remainder of the Dream11 Indian Premier League 2020," it added.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals were dealt with the injury blow to Amit Mishra, IPL's all-time leading wicket-taker among Indians. To burden their woes, Rishabh Pant is also unavailable for selection for at least a week as he recovers from a hamstring niggle.
