Quaid-e-Azam Trophy to continue as per schedule despite cricketer testing positive for Covid-19

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy season will continue according to schedule despite Balochistan cricketer Bismillah Khan testing positive for coronavirus.

Bismillah had returned a positive test on Tuesday and immediately underwent self-isolation within the team hotel.

Contrary to fears surrounding a potential spread of the virus because of him, all remaining players and support personnel tested negative for Covid-19 before the commencement of the third round.

Bismillah's recovery is being monitored by the PCB-appointed doctors once his diagnosis was confirmed. The veteran wicketkeeper scored a century in Balochistan's opening game of this year's campaign but was dismissed for a duck during the clash against table-toppers Southern Punjab.

“Like any ongoing professional sport, Covid-19 and cricket also has to co-exist until such time that an effective vaccine is developed. Keeping this in view, as well as the future of Pakistan cricket and wellbeing of cricketers, the PCB has put in place robust Covid-19 Protocols," reminded PCB director of High Performance, Nadeem Khan.

"These protocols are very closely aligned to international standards and global sport events that will ensure event continuity without compromising the health and safety of the participants," he stressed.

Pakistan is currently witnessing a 'second wave' of the coronavirus pandemic after a lull in the caseload for a couple of months. The number of new Covid-19 infections has been steadily rising in the past few weeks, though the government has advised against a total lockdown.

All matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy are being held behind closed doors across three venues in Karachi. Red-ball cricket will face a hiatus of 11 days following the conclusion of the third round with the fifth edition of the Pakistan Super League resuming on November 14 at Karachi's National Stadium.
