Samiullah Shinwari blitz outclasses sloppy Galle Gladiators in last-ball finish

Samiullah Shinwari blasted an unbeaten 46 off 20 deliveries to fire Dambulla Viiking to a dramatic four-wicket win over Galle Gladiators in Hambantota.

The Afghan all-rounder spanked two sixes and six boundaries in his blistering onslaught that rescued Dambulla from a flimsy position.

The Viiking had slipped to 128/6 in the 17th over, still finding themselves 41 runs away from an unlikely win before Samiullah brought forth his A game and showcased his supreme power-hitting abilities.

Samiullah's resolve to thump the bowlers all over the park was assisted by some ordinary fielding from the Gladiators team.

The Galle players frequently fumbled the ball presumably due to the dew factor and also dropped several chances.

Despite having been the strong favourites for a majority of Dambulla's chase, the final few overs saw Galle put up an atrocious display to gift Dambulla a hard-earned triumph.

Although Dambulla brought the equation down to seven runs in the final over, Shehan Jayasuriya plucked out a couple of deliveries to push the contest to the last ball.

Jayasuriya then sprayed a high full toss on the pads that Samiullah thwacked to the square leg boundary for a six to condemn Galle to the fifth spot in the points table.

Earlier in the fray, Niroshan Dickwella and Angelo Perera built Dambulla's chase with valuable knocks but their progress was derailed by Dhananjaya Lakshan and Lakshan Sandakan's timely breakthroughs.

Galle's innings was punctuated by a string of single-figure scores and quick runs from Jayasuriya, Danushka Gunathilaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa.

The partnership between Rajapaksa and Gunathilaka was developing into something extraordinary but Ramesh Mendis dismissed the Galle skipper and the potentially destructive Azam Khan on successive deliveries to peg back the opposition.

Kasun Rajitha and Dambulla captain Dasun Shanaka were also among the wickets as they ensured there were no booming fireworks in the death overs for Galle, who eventually scrambled to 168/7 in 20 overs.
