The 10th match of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup was played between Pakistan and Ireland at the Cobham Oval in Whangarie on Tuesday. Hasan Khan won the toss and put the opposition in to bat under overcast conditions. Pakistan brought their CWC campaign back on track by thrashing Ireland by 9 wickets with 247 balls to spare.
Shaheen Shah Afridi, the next-gen superstar ripped through the opposition in no time. He made full use of the conditions, bowled a lethal spell of fast bowling and claimed a 6 wicket haul by giving away just 15 runs. His figures of 6 for 15 in just 8.5 overs (3 maidens) became the best by any Pakistani bowler in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup’s history.
Ireland’s star from the previous game Jamie Grassi couldn’t provide them with a solid start. It was all downhill from there onwards. Ireland were bundled out for 97. Hasan Khan took 3 wickets.
Pakistani opening batsmen Zaid Alam and Rohail Nazir didn’t waste time. Zaid Alam smashed 43* off just 19 balls. Hasan Khan came one down to finish off proceedings; he hit a quick-fire 27. Pakistan chased down the target in 8.5 overs. Pakistan’s overall brilliance with both bat and ball helped them cruise to a nine-wicket victory, and stay in contention for a spot in the knockouts.
Next, Pakistan will face Sri Lanka on 19 January in their final group stage match.
