The Super League quarter-final 3 of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2018 was played between Afghanistan and New Zealand on Thursday (25th January) at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Afghanistan crushed hosts New Zealand by 202 runs to reach the semi-finals.
Earlier, Afghanistan opted to bat first, their batsmen were in mood to play defensively. Four of their batsmen scored in excess of fifty plus: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (69), Ibrahim Zadran (68), Bahir Shah (67 not out) and the improbable Azmatullah Omarzai (66 off just 23). This batting prowess ensured they posted a mammoth 309/6. The Kiwi bowlers had no answers and their fielders didn’t help much either.
New Zealand looked shaky right from the start of their innings, they never looked likely to meet the target. It was a collapse of epic proportions as they were baffled by the skill and craftiness of Mujeeb Zadran. They were 20/4 within seven overs. Star all-rounder Rachin Ravindra was run-out for a duck, things went downhill ever since. Mujeeb and Qais both took 4 wickets each as New Zealand were all-out for just 107 runs.
