No discussion on the greatest fast bowling duos of all time will ever be complete without mentioning the two W’s; in their possession was inimitable skill which helped them amass incredible career statistics, and earn a revered status in the echelons of the pace bowling department.
Today their names are synonymous to reverse swing, yorkers, and bustling wickets. Wasim Akram mastered the art of swing in such a way, which was never witnessed before. Accounting for innumerable scalps throughout his career, the top batsmen in the world could barely tackle Wasim’s skill in his heyday.
His partner in crime, Waqar Younis could send in searing toe-crushing yorkers, which threatened the physical wellbeing of opposing batsmen. The smooth run-up culminating in a side-on action was a sight to behold for any cricket lover. Probably the fastest in the initial part of his career, Waqar more often than not broke stumps into half.
It was on Pakistan’s tour of England in 1992, that the two W’s really came to the fore as a potent bowling duo; using both conventional and reverse swing. The duo have the highest number of Test wickets (476) for a pair of opening bowlers bowling in tandem, at a stunning strike rate of only 46.05 balls per wicket while they lie third in ODI’s with 581 wickets.
