The post-Alastair Cook era started well for England as they scored a decent first-innings total against a challenging Sri Lankan spin attack. England was largely helped by debutant Ben Foakes who scored a marvelous century to put his team into a safe position.
With an innings of 107, Foakes has become only the second England wicketkeeper to make a century on Test debut. Foakes reached the milestone after 27 minutes' play on day two of the first clash with Sri Lanka in Galle.
The 25-year-old was chosen as a specialist keeper after coach Trevor Bayliss pushed the idea that a specialist gloveman would be needed on Galle's turning pitch.
