England’s long wait to win a Test match on away soil finally ended as they spun their way to a massive 211-run win against the hosts Sri Lanka. It was England’s first victory at the venue of Galle and first away Test win in nearly two years.
Set an improbable target of 461 and two days to do the unprecedented, Sri Lanka was all out for 250 after tea on the fourth day, with Rangana Herath conceding the match in his farewell Test trying to get a second run but diving a whisker short.
This earned England its biggest win against Sri Lanka in terms of runs, eclipsing a 137-run win at Lord's in 1991. Joe Root relied heavily on his spin trio of Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and Jack Leach, who combined picked 16 wickets.
