India women defeated New Zealand women by 34 runs in the opening match of the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in Guyana on Friday.
India won the toss and elected to bat first. They lost three wickets in the early overs. However, Jemimah Rodrigues (59) and Harmanpreet Kaur (103) batted responsibly and led their side to 194 for 5 in the stipulated 20 overs.
New Zealand, in response, got off to a good start. But their middle-order batswomen could not maintain the momentum. Consequently, they hardly managed to reach 160 for 9 in 20 overs. Suzie Bates scored 67 runs and Katey Martin contributed 39. India’s Kaur was named player of the match.
