The second innings of the Test at Cape Town saw Pakistan try out another opening combination in the shape of Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq. This latest experiment in the batting order came about after Fakhar Zaman terribly flopped in the three innings in the series thus far.
However, this attempt to stabilize the opening pair once again backfired as Imam fell cheaply chasing a wide delivery against Dale Steyn. This further exemplifies Pakistan’s trouble in finding a suitable opening pair in Test cricket as they have now tried out 12 different pairs under the coaching stint of Mickey Arthur.
While Shan looks steady to hold onto his spot in the playing XI, the same cannot be said of Imam who has now floundered in a number of innings. Hence, Pakistan could be in store for yet another different opening combination as this problem lingers.
