Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced the appointment of Dean Elgar as stand-in captain of South Africa in place of Faf du Plessis for the final Test against Pakistan. Du Plessis was suspended for one match after South Africa fell short of the required over-rate during the second Test at Newlands.

Elgar has previously captained at the U-19 level during the Afro-Asia Cup and the World Cup and in Tests when he stood in for Du Plessis against England in 2017, following the birth of Du Plessis’ first child.

The selectors have also put uncapped opening batsman Pieter Malan on standby for Aiden Markram, who has a right thigh injury sustained while fielding in the previous test match at Newlands.
