Pakistan is constantly facing challenges in finding the right combination of openers, which has an overall negative impact on the batting lineup. Their batting failure means that Pakistan quickly find themselves 2 down for virtually nothing on the board, putting the onus on the middle order to rescue the team from dire straits.

This negative trend continued for Pakistan all throughout the Test series in South Africa right until the last innings of the final match which saw some resistance from the pair of Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq.

The two put on 67 for the first wicket, which marks the first 50-plus opening partnership registered Pakistan in South Africa in 16 years.

The last such stand came about way back in 2002, between Taufeeq Umar and Saleem Elahi. A gap of 20 innings in between doesn’t read well for Pakistan, but it depicts the state of affairs for their batsmen consistently over the years.
