Nepalese leg-spin sensation Sandeep Lamichhane has called on the International Cricket Council (ICC) to expand the number of teams in the World Cup to up to 16 teams. Criticizing the current format, he woefully claimed that limiting the tournament to 10 teams, hurts players from emerging cricket nations.
The 18-year-old spinner has been in top notch form in different leagues around the world and became the first player from his country to acquire an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract. He expressed his frustration on missing out on the World Cup that starts on May 30.
“Sorry to say but a 10-team World Cup will hurt a lot of players like me who will not be a part of it. I think there should be 14-16 teams in the World Cup. Even in 2023 there are (again) only 10 teams so it will be a while before we can even think of playing in the 50-over event,” he stated on the matter.
