England opening batsman, Alex Hales, has been dropped from all England squads with immediate effect, including their 15-man World Cup squad, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed on Monday, 29 April.
Hales has also been withdrawn for the one-off One-Day International against Ireland, set to be played in Malahide on Friday, and the limited-overs series against Pakistan. The decision from the ECB comes after reports that Hales tested positive for a recreational drug test, and was handed a 21-day ban for the second such offence.
According to a statement by the ECB, “The decision has been taken by the ECB Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket and the England National Cricket Selectors, having considered what is in the best interests of the England team. Consideration was given to creating the right environment within the team and ensuring that there are no unnecessary distractions and that the team is in the best position to succeed going into this crucial period.”
