Australian all-rounder, James Faulkner has released a statement saying he is not gay after a post on Instagram sparked widespread speculation he was in a same-sex relationship. The 29-year-old appeared to suggest he was in a same-sex relationship when he shared a picture on Instagram and Twitter of himself alongside his mother and a man he described as his "boyfriend".
Most believed the message was the all-rounder's way of revealing his sexuality, which would have made him the first male professional cricketer in the country to confirm he was gay. Prior to editing the Instagram post, Faulkner had been congratulated by former and current teammates and the post had received more than 15,000 likes and led news sites internationally.
But it later emerged that the posts had been misinterpreted, with Faulkner confirming on his Instagram account that he was not gay. "There seems to be a misunderstanding about my post from last night, I am not gay, however, it has been fantastic to see the support from and for the LGBT community," he said.
