South Africa will be without experienced pacer Dale Steyn in the ICC Cricket World Cup opener against England at The Oval. The 35-year-old is still recovering from his shoulder injury that saw him return home from the IPL earlier this month.
It adds more pressure on Kagiso Rabada, who has only recently returned from back injury himself. The Rabada-Steyn duo is the most anticipated fast bowling duo in the upcoming World Cup and captain Faf du Plessis is banking on the duo to contribute massively in their campaign.
“He won't be available for the first game. We've still got 14 others so we'll choose from them. We know that he's close and he's getting closer every day. We're hoping that if not Sunday then certainly by India (June 5),” said Ottis Gibson, the South Africa coach.
In Steyn's absence, it leaves Rabada and Lungi Ngidi to lead the South Africa attack against England along with Chris Morris to complete their bowling attack.
