As per the expectations, England started their World Cup journey on a high note by beating South Africa. In the opening game of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 tournament, England were put to bat first which saw hosts amassing 311 runs. While South Africa looked good to chase it at the halfway stage, English bowling department showed strength to manage an emphatic 104-run victory.
During their batting, the top-ranked ODI team got into a bit of trouble as Jason Roy and Joe Root were dismissed in consecutive overs to leave England reeling at 111-3. However, all-rounder Ben Stokes came to rescue as the talismanic all-rounder joined hands with skipper Eoin Morgan to produce a much needed 106-run partnership.
Even after that, the 27-year old cricketer continued to muster runs which allowed England to post yet another total in excess of 300. In his confident innings, the New Zealand born mustered 89 runs consuming only 79 balls by registering 9 boundaries. The party didn’t end there as the enterprising cricketer claimed 2 wickets and plucked a scintillating catch while fielding which lead to Andile Phehlukwayo’s dismissal – an event which almost sealed the game for England. A superlative all-round outing which enabled Stokes to grab the player of the match award jubilated the think tank as they are banking him to continue his prowess in the rest of the tournament.
