Bangladesh stunned South Africa in their opening game of the 2019 World Cup as the Bengal Tigers roared assertively to mark their entry in the grand tournament. Conquering the Proteas in all three aspects of the game, Bangladesh were easily the better side on the day as they defeated Faf du Plessis’ men by 21 runs.
The dominance on display by Bangladesh was underscored by their emphatic batting performance, which saw them pile on their highest ever total in ODI cricket. Experienced campaigners Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan were once again in the thick of things as they forged a record partnership of 142 runs for the third wicket that flattened the spirits of the South African bowlers.
Already pushed on the back foot in the first innings, South Africa were then left with the daunting task of completing the highest run chase in World Cup history. Frequent loss of wickets and ordinary batting meant South Africa were never in the game and spluttered along the way to their second loss of the tournament.
