Pakistan looked all but out of the game when Wahab Riaz joined his captain Sarfaraz Ahmed out in the middle with his team requiring an improbable task of more than a 100 runs for victory. However, Wahab freed his arms and played some top shots in his fantastic innings of 45 off 39 balls to give Pakistan a glimmer of hope chasing down 307 posted by Australia.
The left-arm pacer had earlier bowled tremendously in the first innings, but this time it was his batting that stole the spotlight. Backing away and unleashing attacking strokes, Wahab launched 3 maximums and 2 fours in his enterprising knock.
From a position of being down and out of the match, his late pyrotechnics with the bat afforded Pakistan some respectability in terms of the margin of loss. He was finally dismissed by Australia’s pace lynchpin Mitchell Starc after the appeal for caught-behind was reviewed.
