Bairstow’s maiden World Cup ton relights England’s semi-final hopes

Bairstow’s maiden World Cup ton relights England’s semi-final hopes

After losing crucial games to Sri Lanka and defending champions Australia, England recorded a sensational comeback in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 tournament. In a must-win game, the hosts produced a laudable batting display to amass 337 runs. India, in reply, failed to counter the target led by a questionable approach in the death overs of the innings.

Flamboyant opening batsman of England Jonny Bairstow saved his best for a tough game against India. England needed their opener to fire and he batted with a lot of flair to register his first World Cup century. The stylish innings of the 29-year old cricketer consisted of 111 runs which saw him consuming only 109 deliveries. To embellish the knock, the belligerent striker smashed 10 fours and 6 sixes.

As per the expectations, the Yorkshire born flew away with the player of the match award. This allowed the hosts to claim 2 important points as the competition is moving towards its business end. England’s next World Cup fixture will be played against New Zealand on July 3 at Chester-le-Street.
