The Old Trafford pitch prepared for the semi-final between India and New Zealand saw the Kiwis struggle for runs after opting to bat first. Unable to settle against some tight lines and lengths maintained by the Indian bowlers, the Black Caps batters looked in all sorts of trouble as they fought hard to take control of the proceedings.
Given the difficulties faced by the New Zealand batsmen, several former cricketers appeared to be critical of the surface. The Old Trafford wicket provided a great deal of turn to the spinners much to the surprise of former Australian batsman Mark Waugh.
Meanwhile, ex-England player Mark Butcher gave a damning assessment on the quality of pitches in the tournament as he termed them as “garbage.” Indian commentator Sanjay Manjrekar also felt the pitch was quite tough to bat on and predicted problems for the chasing side.
