In the aftermath of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 tournament, Pakistan’s skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed is under scrutiny as his own performances have been below par and that too from some time. Possible candidates to replace him includes the name of Babar Azam and Imad Wasim, but none of them looks a strong skipper. However, Pakistan can take a bold decision by appointing opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq as their new ODI skipper for the following reasons:
“A consistent performer”
When it comes about discussing a team’s captain, consistency in his own performances comes as a major plus as this can install a player in a position from where he can lead from the front. Ever since his debut, the left-handed batsman has smashed quality bowling attacks to amass a plethora of runs. In 36 ODIs, Imam mustered 1692 runs smashing 7 tons and 6 half-centuries. His mind-boggling consistency can serve as a major trait to earn him the respect a skipper deserves.
Right from the word go, Imam has received hate in an abundant form. Success or failure, the 23-year old has always been treated with harsh questions for his relations with chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq. Nevertheless, he allowed all this negativity to motivate him to do better and better. While he got emotional on few occasions, but his consistent performances spoke highly about his strong mentality.
“Longevity of career”
Being only 23 years of age and an extremely consistent player, Imam is here to stay. ODI is one format of the game where he is blossoming into a reliable batter for the boys in green. All this indicates towards the Lahore born having a long career for Pakistan. With this confidence and skill-set, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) could witness themselves in a position to handle Imam Pakistan’s ODI captaincy.
