English opening batsman Jason Roy has been included in the Ashes squad after his stellar run in limited-overs cricket over the past couple of years. The right-hander pushed his Ashes selection by playing a major role in England’s World Cup triumph recently.
Head coach Trevor Bayliss believes that Roy could be the answer to his side’s opening problems in Test cricket as the team has failed to find a suitable replacement of Alastair Cook since his retirement last year.
“We want him to go out and play his natural game but in red-ball cricket you have to be a little more selective. You've got to make a conscious effort to say to yourself, 'I'm not going to go for the big cover drive on the up until I'm really settled, the wicket is flat or the ball's not doing as much,” said Bayliss.
