The iconic Hong Kong Sixes has been cancelled, most likely forever, owing to Hong Kong government’s disinterest and lack of sponsorship. Cricket Hong Kong (CHK) is trying to move forward with time and stage tournaments that have greater recognition on the world stage.
When asked if this is the end of the tournament, Melloy replied, “I personally think so but you can never say never.”
The Hong Kong Sixes began in 1992 continuing till 1997 before a three-year haul. It restarted in 2001 and continued till 2013 before again being shelved. At its peak, the competition was lauded for its great innovation and excitement.
The early editions of the tournament saw national teams sending their top Test and one-day international players. However, towards the end, most teams would field second-string sides.
