England captain, Joe Root has agreed to bat at No. 3 when they begin their quest to regain the Ashes from Australia at Edgbaston. England’s top-order woes forced Root to sacrifice himself to bat at the key No. 3 position leaving his preferred No. 4 batting position.
Root approached the England management with the offer after the win against Ireland last week when they were bowled out in a session on the opening day for just 85. As a result of this, Joe Denly will drop down to four for the opening match of the series.
Root has not batted at No. 3 where he averages 40.47 in 40 innings with two centuries and 10 half-centuries - since the fourth Test against India last year, while he averages 48 batting at the No. 4 position.
