The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially launched Test Championship for the first time in history as it intends to regain the interest of fans in the premier format of the sport.
Former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene has welcomed the introduction of the Championship as he feels that such competitions would certainly help in bringing fans back to Test cricket and would also help in motivating the players to play Test cricket.
“We have a World Championship in other formats and I think it's important to bring that over into Test cricket. Otherwise, it just becomes a bilateral series after bilateral series. Once you bring in that concept, there will be enough competitive structure in the five-day game to make fans excited and keep them gripped over a number of years," said Mahela.
Moreover, former Aussie skipper Steve Waugh has also appreciated the initiative taken by the ICC as he feels that Test format needed something like this to inspire players to be at their best in this format as well.
