England and Australia did not indulge in the pre-match handshake after reports emerged before the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston that the hosts did not give in to the suggestions made by the visitors. Apparently, England captain Joe Root and coach Trevor Bayliss were “frustrated” about Australian skipper Tim Paine’s new handshake ritual.
Root and Bayliss had informed ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle they had not been formally approached with implementing this handshake ceremony, which was scheduled to take place right after the national anthems of the two teams ahead of the match.
The pre-game handshake has been an activity introduced by Paine in the aftermath of the ball-tampering scandal to symbolize the changed culture of the Aussie dressing room. But his antics have not been found likeable by the English players, particularly Root.
