Twitter furious with low-quality umpiring in Ashes Test

Fresh from the World Cup final controversy, the standards of umpiring have once again come into question on the opening day of the Ashes Test at Edgbaston. The two on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Joel Wilson had a shocker of a day out in the middle as they routinely gave wrong verdicts during Australia’s first innings, creating a farcical scenario.

As many as six incorrect decisions were made during the day’s play, as the two officials caught attention on social media. The umpires came under plenty of fire on Twitter, as former cricketers and other celebrities came to the fore with their vitriolic criticism.

The low-quality umpiring from Wilson and Dar saw them make three fallacious verdicts each.

What made the situation more complex was that three of those decisions were not reviewed by the batting or fielding side, meaning that the subject of the wrongful verdict was rendered unlucky.
