Former Australian captain Steve Smith has made an astounding return to Test cricket as he scored one of his best hundreds in the first innings of the ongoing Birmingham Test. The right-hander constructed a beautiful inning while batting with the tail, eventually taking Australia to a respectable total after the horrific batting collapse.
Aussie team mentor and one of the greatest batsmen of all time, Ricky Ponting believes that Smith could end up as one of the greats of the game if he continues to play way he did on August 1.
“It just goes to show how strong he is mentally and how good a Test match player he is. If he keeps trending the way he is, he’ll be remembered as one of the all-time greats that the game has ever seen. He’s going to leave a lot of us old blokes behind, that’s for sure,” said Ponting.
Ponting said that Smith is well aware of his game and not many players in the world have that which is why they do not end up among great players.
