West Indies’ star all-rounder Andre Russell has ruled himself out of the opening two T20Is of the three-match series against India due to a recurring knee injury. The explosive power hitter was initially selected in the Caribbean T20 squad to bolster the middle order but his unavailability means the selectors have now gone for the services of Jason Mohammed.
Russell had last month been subject to a knee injury, which eventually forced him to withdraw from the World Cup midway through the tournament. The persistent knee issue has now resurfaced during the Global T20 Canada, where he complained about discomfort.
“We welcome Jason Mohammed into the squad for the first two T20 matches here in Florida. He is a player with lots of experience in all three formats and - having done well for Trinidad & Tobago as well as Guyana Amazon Warriors,” West Indies interim coach Floyd Reifer said.
