The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently announced the list of players who have been awarded central contracts for the next 1 year. The number of players has been reduced to 19 as it was previously 33.
Former captains and senior players, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez, have not been awarded central contracts which is an indication that the PCB does not plan on persisting with them on consistent basis.
Both the players have been playing limited overs cricket for Pakistan, but Malik recently announced his retirement from ODI cricket as he wants to focus on the T20 World Cup next year.
However, Hafeez has not given any indication regarding his limited overs retirement which means that he also wishes to play the mega event next year. However, after not getting the central contracts, both players’ chances of being in the side for the next year’s mega event have diminished significantly.
Both the allrounders would need to perform really well in the next season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in order to strengthen their case for selection. Otherwise, the chances of Hafeez playing ODIs for Pakistan are quite low after his dismal show in the recent ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
