Why should Babar Azam start leading Pakistan?

Why should Babar Azam start leading Pakistan?

After an unimpressive show by Sarfaraz Ahmed in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 tournament, the captaincy debate of Pakistan is wide open. While few want the wicket-keeper batsman to continue his task, others are in disagreement as they believe that it is time for Pakistan to adopt a new skipper and target the next edition of the mega-event. In this regard, many names came forward including Pakistan’s prolific batsman Babar Azam. Here are three major reasons to have him lead the boys in green.

Ever since his debut in 2015, Babar Azam has refused to look back. The dexterous batsman has grown from strength to strength to become Pakistan’s best batsman in white-ball cricket. Even in the longest format of the game, Babar recorded a strong comeback after experiencing a declining curve. Babar’s consistency is evident from the fact that he averages more than 50 in both white-ball formats. The importance of a performing skipper is known to all and with all these numbers, Babar emerges as a top candidate to lead Pakistan.

Debating about leading the national team, one thing which is of paramount importance is the ability to keep a cool head under pressure. This fits perfectly on the 24-year old batsman as he always remains focused on his game. For instance, the game against New Zealand in World Cup 2019 saw the best of Babar as he remained calm while facing tremendous pressure to record a stunning century.

While discussing all the important factors of leadership, experience perhaps brings the biggest advantage as you ameliorate your skills with every game. The Lahore born served as Pakistan’s leader in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2012 in Australia. Leading the green team brilliantly, Babar helped Pakistan top their group. However, a dismal batting display knocked Pakistan out as they lost to arch-rivals India in the quarter-finals of the tournament. Even in that game, his tactical mind was on display which saw Pakistan almost pulling out an unlikely victory.
