Cricket world witnessed a very interesting incident during the 2nd Ashes Test match at Lord’s as for the first time in forever a substituted player batted in the match. Steve Smith was ruled out of the remaining Lord’s Test after he suffered from concussions which resulted from a bouncer blow by Jofra Archer.
Marnus Labuschagne replaced Smith not only as a substitute fielder only but as a player which allowed him to bat in place of him in the 2nd Innings. This is Like for Like Substitution, a new rule added in the book by ICC for the Test Championship.
According to this, a player suffering from concussion can be replaced during the match by another player and the substitute can bat and bowl as well. However; ICC is yet to clarify its complete rules.
Remember Marnus and Smith both are right-handed middle-order batsmen and both of them can bowl part-time leg spin. Therefore, he was the perfect like-for-like substitution for Smith.
