Steve Smith has been the star of Australia’s batting lineup across the opening two Tests of the ongoing Ashes series but will not take part in the third match at Headingley. He headlined his comeback Test at Edgbaston with twin centuries helping Australia to a 251-run win and followed it up with a sublime knock of 92 in the next game at Lord’s.
However, Smith’s merry run was cut short by a brutal bouncer from Jofra Archer during his stay at the crease in the first innings of second Test. Smith was batting at 80 when Archer delivered a sharp bumper that struck the back of his neck and head. Immediately showing signs of discomfort was forced off the field and later withdrawn from the final day’s play.
The latest reports suggest Smith has still not recovered from his concussion, which leaves Australia short of a key batter in their batting order in the upcoming game. Earlier in the last match, Smith was substituted with Marnus Labuschagne who top-scored with 59 in Australia’s total of 154/6.
