India entered into the first Test against West Indies without star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the playing XI. The shocking omission of the 65-Test veteran truly surprised fans as India instead went for a more pace-heavy attack and opted for the services of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the team.

The decision to leave out Ashwin clearly infuriated the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who was stunned by the team management’s tactics. Gavaskar lashed out at the relevant authorities and questioned the logic of excluding such a competitive Test player.
“[The selection] astonished me. A man with that kind of record, especially against the West Indies. He doesn't find a place in this playing XI. That is stunning. Astonishing,” a vocal Gavaskar pointed out during his commentary stint in the ongoing Test match.
